Does the same go for outdoor ads that promote upcoming movies since the eye
is not currently standing in front of a movie theater? Or maybe television
programming ads in print, outdoor & radio? And vice-versa infinite.

All mediums, including online, can be effective for advertising other
mediums and driving traffic/viewership/sales -- brand building is still
brand building. It's been going on for decades; why do we forget our
traditional roots and knowing what works when suddenly a new medium is
brought to the forefront? Using traditional advertising works; I've
witnessed several success stories for many different online presences/brands
(commerce, content & promotional sites), and I have yet to tell anyone "you
know, you really shouldn't advertise in traditional mediums or put your URL
on pack -- online-only is the best for you." I probably wouldn't have any
clients if I made that recommendation. ;)
