Hopefully, the bookmark function won't make it to Java Script... we'd
have a bookmark for every site we visit.
Another potentially dangerous combination of Java Script and advertising
is the "onMouseOver" function. Imagine ads that took you to their
destinations as soon as your mouse rolled over them. It would be
anarchy, with people avoiding ads to try and navigate. I can't see it
ever being acceptable in general...
But, a couple years ago, Dan Zen created a Teleporter. The Teleporter
activated on mouse rollover to take you to a random destination in a list
of URLs. The list could be your favourite URLs, URLs for pages within
your site, or URLs to sites who pay to be in your Teleporter.
This was initially a shockwave applet but could easily be a gif and a bit
of javascript. We did not go with Javascript at the time because we had
hard coded the Dan Zen URL in the Teleporter to randomly be chosen along
with the rest. This gave people a chance to buy their own Teleporters.
The onMouseOver behavior is acceptable in this case because people can
identify the Teleporter as a rollover interface. To see an example go to
http://www.danzen.com and select history.
Another way to make use of this concept is on internal promotions. Spice
up your site with a "black hole" that takes you to a contest page or
what-have-you.
Activation on rollover could be very successful if you can convince sites
to modify their ad code slightly for you and your campaign matches the
concept. Like, "Check out the power of our new vacuum 3XR" and the ad
just sucks them through to the Hoover site without clicking.
