Hi,

I'm enjoying the discussions on the list. The "math doesn't work"
thread especially caught my attention. The math DOES work. When it
doesn't work, there are two reasons:

1. May of the sites out there have too much "fat" in their budget. I
began as a Web developer (straight from journalism). The person
calling the shots needs to be a LITTLE closer to this "micro." Why?
Because there are less expensive, but professional, solutions to many
projects -- in both "who" and "what" to use. How much of your budget
is paying people to "learn" something?

2. A site needs to create "oxygen" -- something that we NEED to
consume. The Web is a great place for collections -- they will never
become obsolete. Then why are so many sites nothing more than
"repackaged search engines" and "the best site for topic xyz?" If
you're site does not create oxygen, you're going to need to buy lots
of ads and do lots of press releases to get your site out there.
(Another advantage of collectible content/interactivity is that most
of the content is supplied by the users themselves, cutting costs
drastically)

I can't see my site ever having 100 employees. Don't need it. If it
remains collectible content, it should only have 3 fulltimers (as it
has now).

I wouldn't want to be any search engine besides Yahoo and Excite for
this reason..
