The issue it seems to me is if MatchLogic's technology is part of a
proposal to the IAB, and that technology is patented, and the IAB chooses
that proposal/technology to endorse as a standard, is the industry going to
be forced to license the "standard" from MatchLogic if they want to
implement the IAB recommendation?

Don't laugh. I think it could happen. It seems to me very similar to the
situation of Unisys and their patent for the GIF format.

http://www.unisys.com/LeadStory/lzwfaq.html

The GIF format became the defacto standard for graphics online before
anyone realized Unisys owned a patent. Any company that incorporated the
GIF compression/decompression engine in their product had to license it
from Unisys.

Thoughts? Does this have the potential to be a similar situation?

(Before the mob picks up its pitchforks and torches, I just want to stress
that my sources tell me the IAB has not yet selected any of the cache
busting proposals submitted for consideration.)
