Hi everyone,
Bahman Eslamboly wrote about the need to establish what criteria impact the
value of a web site. I visited his website, and his article on valuation is
very good - everyone really should take a peek:
http://www.websitebroker.com/valuation.html
I'd like to focus on a point he raised in this article which got me
thinking about my own site's valuation. I run a resource site for web
designers called the Connpad Toolbox - it basically consists of a graphics
and fonts archive, plus a link directory to other useful sites. This site
got some favorable exposure at its launch last October, and traffic has
since been climbing steadily, currently holding at 1000-1500 page views per
day.
One of the factors mentioned in evaluating site value was the number and
quality of links leading into your site. In my opinion, this cannot be
overestimated. On a small scale, my site is a great example - except for
Hotbot, search engines send me virtually no traffic. Instead, I rely on
word of mouth and dozens of links back, reciprocal and not. I believe that
here is where my site's true value would rest were I to sell it, because
these links are the closest thing to a permanent, renewable resource that
the Web provides.
Look to Netscape for an overkill example of this. http://home.netscape.com
isn't much to look at, and I never even thought of visiting it back when I
used Internet Explorer. But now I've got that animated "N" on my browser,
and that's as good as 5th Avenue real estate. That, plus all those
"Netscape now" buttons scattered across the Net, amounts to a solid income
stream (and they could certainly use it).
I hope this thread expands - many thanks to Bahman Eslamboly for starting it.
