The best model is the interactive model. The one I use is a "gateway"
to the interactive area on my site. They register and are able to use
the forums, polls, calendar, classified ads section etc.

This way I get the basics on each (I'm interested in %'s of high
school and college students) and can later gear my poll to what I
want them to tell me.

The only thing you'd want to do is to add more questions, so your
client will get more data. Your "reason" for the form is to let them
into an interactive area where they may post messages.

Like I said, asking a few questions to enter an interactive area is a
good way to justify it. I'm grappling with this same issue. Should I
force every students who wants to see a paper register? Yes, it
greatly increases the value of my traffic, but it will not please
my audience, and many (if not most "Buttheads") will give fake info
anyways.

I'll probably keep registration where it is -- it lets a content
owner keep tabs and keep in touch with the "core" users.
