I thought I'd reply to Rick here after we had some offline exchanges. I'd
recommend that everyone interested in this subject do his autoresponder to
get his summary of how the cache-busting/counting stuff works. Quite
interesting. And quite nice for a guy try to make a living as a journalist
to "donate" out of his own time and effort to the rest of us.
It's a little technical, but the point I had wanted to make originally was
that all Web browser transactions are client-driven. The way in which
IMGIS, at least, makes their solution work is through a JavaScript that the
Web browser executes to retrieve unique ads. (The HTML version works, too,
but not as consistently.)
The point to remember is that proxy servers initiate all transactions at
the behest of a browser; there is no case in which an ad server contacts a
proxy server to determine whether an ad is in the cache. Browsers hit
proxies which hit ad servers. Clever ad-serving companies write their HTML
or JavaScript to fool the proxy by generating unique retrievals for each
page view. The companies that use a pointer-system can avoid retrieving the
same ad multiple times by only using a system that registers a new page
view but doesn't uniquely name the actual graphics (or code) that comprises
a banner ad.
