Along similar lines, the great resource SearchEngineWatch conducted an
unscientific survey of its users last summer about Yahoo! that may be of
some interest: http://searchenginewatch.com/webmasters/yahoo/
It contains quotes from sites that have been pulling their hair out getting
listed w/ Yahoo! and those that are happy to be included. It tries to
speculate on what are the common characteristics of those who get in, and
one factor seems to be that they're listing more business sites than hobby
sites these days. Still, even among those who are listed, many have had
nightmares getting their listings corrected and updated.
I spoke with Srinija Srinivasan, quoted in the article you referenced, for
my book research <plug> "Net Results: Web Marketing That Works," due out in
early April </plug>, and she said the same thing to me, that they are
trying to back away from being seen as comprehensive but rather
qualitative. To empathize with them, they do get *thousands* of submissions
daily, and as anyone in the technology space knows, businesses dependent on
human beings don't scale well. On the other hand, their model is clearly
broken, and if they are to maintain their position as market leader, they
urgently need to fix it, before popular sentiment turns against them. It's
one thing to annoy the Webmasters, but when surfers start deciding Yahoo!
is an unreliable resource w/ too many 404 msgs and missing important
resources, the game is up.
