I've been thinking about the Yahoo problem for a few months, and would like
to know what everyone thinks about the following.
Yahoo's system of manually evaluating each site and categorizing it
accordingly is far better than even the best spider design. But that's also
it's biggest problem - all those expensive sire reviewers, even if they are
college students, want to be paid. Also, banner advertising on a search
site is prohibitively expensive. To top everything off, web designers
complain that submissions take too long, or don't happen at all.
How do you solve all these problems at once? Have site designers volunteer
to take responsibility for setting up and maintaining one of Yahoo's pages,
in exchange for a free banner ad for their site on that page. This is
similar to what The Mining Company does, except that there's no content
creation involved - just handling link submission and maintenance.
This gives Yahoo access to a free, qualified labor force (a few thousand
web designers) capable of handling the volume of submissions. It also gives
designers a chance to get advertising on a high-traffic search site. And
this creates a positive feedback loop, because the better a page is
maintained, the more traffic it will get, from bookmarks and links on other
sites. Maybe Yahoo could provide a star rating to make the best pages stand
out. And, to avoid conflicts of interest, don't assign pages to a designer
whose site is directly related to the contents of the page (otherwise,
competitor sites might not get listed).
The only down side to this is having two banners per page, the designer's
and Yahoo's. A longer download, sure, but a small price to pay for a truly
comprehensive, up-to-date directory.
