Both these methods suffer from the problem that you can't be sure you're
measuring bandwidth between the server and the client. In many cases you'll
be measuring bandwidth between the server and a proxy.

You can only measure the bandwidth to a destination if you know where that
destination is. The widespread use of proxy servers makes that impossible.

Furthermore, Darren's index.html method measures latency (the
responsiveness of the connection), which is different to bandwidth (the
amount of data which can pass along the connection). There is not always a
correlation between the two. For example, satellites which are being
launced into space to improve future Internet connectivity (amongst other
things) offer lots of bandwidth, but with low latency.

Using ping for this is a very bad idea. (Those who are interested in
learning why should read up on the difference between the ICMP and TCP
protocols, specifically the Nagle algorithm).
