This makes no sense at all. Why would they be worried about
devaluing their sold inventory if the only people who are going to
know that they are trading unsold inventory are those they trade with?
No sites that I am aware of advertise on their rate cards that they trade
unsold inventory. It is done on a private basis by phone or email between
the two sites.

For example, Yahoo wants to trade with Lycos for a portion of unsold inventory
run of site. Yahoo is most likely not going to be a buyer on Lycos for their
sold inventory, so why would Lycos be worried that doing a trade would
devalue their sold inventory? If they are worried about this, then they
should
be worried about it with their paid advertisers and not those who are
interested
in trading inventory.

The truth of the matter is that inventory trades are a very common occurance
among the larger sites on a monthly basis. I am in full agreement with you
Kristine that trading inventory is not for everyone - like the example you
listed
about Web hosting services.
