I would like to get some feedback from the list on this particular post I
sent orginally to WWWAC-AD:
i would rather have ads built into the client browser that are served
centrally, and not up to the website to sell or maintain -- like juno or
traditional broadcast networks (it's not up for the producers or staff of
seinfeld to go out and solicit advertising; it's the network that carries
the content that has the responsibility to sell ad space/time). netscape,
microsoft or custom browser builders (i.e. disney's browser for kids)
would build a constant frame into their browser for carrying the banner,
and each browser builder would have its own ad network. banners would be
served centrally according to the context of the page the user is
currently viewing. so if you were looking at a page about bicycles, the ad
serving software would see if there is a banner that matches that criteria
& serve it to the user. instead of making one initial request, the
browser would make two requests -- one to the page the user wants to see,
and the other to the ad network. if there isn't a banner in place to be
served on context, the ad server would serve one based on geographic or
demographic aspects of the user, or a general rotation banner. run of
site would turn into run of web. each browser/ad network would compete
against each other for audience and reach. websites could still actively
seek out product placements or sponsorships by third party to collect
revenue, and/or enter in agreements with the ad networks for revenue
sharing based on how many ad requests their website generates, click
throughs, transactions, etc.
