Whether it's better for a site to charge a Flat Rate or CPM depends on
the type and amount of traffic the site generates. For example, our
site, enr.com receives approximately 30,000 page views on our homepage
per month. However, our site is very specific to the construction and
engineering industry, and the print version of the magazine has been an
industry leader for many years. We are able to charge monthly and yearly
sponsorship rates on our site because our advertisers know exactly who
is looking at our site, and are willing to pay for those eyeballs. We
were considering switching to a CPM model, but in order to generate the
same revenue we would have to charge a much higher CPM rate than is
considered average.
