Since I started this thread, I have to finish with an
excellent example of what I believe says it all about
surveys. People Magazine is running its 3rd Annual 50 Most
Beautiful People poll and allowed folks to register on-line
and they allowed for a write-in candidate.

Well I first heard about it on Monday (4/27) evening and
the write-in contender "Hank the Angry, Drunken Dwarf" had
404 votes and was in 25th place. As of this minute (2:30PM
4/30) he is leading the nominations with 161,113 votes!
Leonardo DiCaprio is second with 7,241 votes.

IMHO, it goes to show the power of the Net (and the
stupidity of Net surveys).

On E-Tailer's Digest, we refer to surveys often, as it is an
integral part of retailing (which is what we discuss). The
problem we find is surveys aren't always designed for the
right people. For example, there is a monthly report on
retailing which shows how the top 10 retailers in the US are
doing in same-store sales this year to last. Those retailers
represent less than 1% of the number of retailers in the
U.S., and are not representative of what the "average"
retailer does.

When you see numbers bantered about on the number of people
on the Net that range from 40 million to 120 million, you
get to wonder.
