John Marriott is correct. There is very little out there that allows you to
compare web site values and determine how much your own web site might be
worth. You hear about multi million dollar deals often, but must realize
that those are the exceptions and not every web site can be compared to a
site that was acquired for $25 million. However, there are many sites with
values between the mid six figures and the very low seven figures and a
"mechanism" lacks to properly compare and evaluate such sites. As John
mentioned, we have been trying to fill that "gap" with our
WebSiteBroker.com site at: http://www.websitebroker.com .
I have also spent some time and created a Excel Spreadsheet Template that
can be used to value existing web sites. The spreadsheet template can be
found at: http://www.websitebroker.com/forms/forms.html under "Web Site
Valuation Spreadsheet Template". The template is based on my web site
valuation article ( http://www.websitebroker.com/valuation.html ) which has
also been expanded a little bit.
You can use the template and plug in your own numbers to see what you can
come up with for a value of an existing web site. Please remember that
although the spreadsheet template has many variables that can be used, it
is still a very early version. I am letting you know about and making it
available for free in response to John Marriott's post and in the hopes of
getting some input from the readers of this list who in the past have
provided very valuable feedback.
