I have been involved in may e-mail campaigns to registered users, who have
agree to receiving further information, of client sites. We have found
that the conversion of e-mails to responses is very high indeed. For
example: We activated a research programme for users of a certain site
asking them to go to the site and fill in a questionnaire. We got a
conversion rate of 73% from an initial mail out of c.8,500. Very good
response indeed - and with no incentive.

We found that users filled in the questionnaire and browsed the site, and
more importantly stayed on the site longer than an average visitor. Also
the accesses to the site increased and plateaued out at a higher level than
before.

Not the most sophisticated form of usage of e-mail but very effective. The
research results were robust and very useful.
