I would be interested to hear what others have to say about
counting ad views for cached ads. Our site,
http://WebDevelopersJournal.com is fortunate enough to sell
all our inventory but our logs show MUCH higher page views
than Cliqnow, the ad network we use, reports. I suppose the
issue may be that we are counting HTML pages served (each
has an ad) and Cliqnow is counting ad images served. Their
images are certainly cached quite a bit as visitors to our
site move around and see the same ad more than once. Cliqnow
says in their hype:
"We have now created a system that separates "primary"
(non-cached) impressions and cached impressions. Because
MatchLogic is the only ad serving system able to bust cache,
CLIQNOW! will comply with industry standard practices of
tracking, charging, and paying on the primary (non-cached)
ad views only."
In other words they can report properly but choose not to
since "industry standard" is to pay on the lower number.
What's the deal? Are we being hosed or is this normal. We
completely give up the idea of collecting for any ad views
distorted by proxy servers - such as people coming from AOL.
Our prop head says it's not really a technically difficult
to prevent the ad images from being cached. So why doesn't
everybody it right? Or do they.
Cliqnow seemed a bit iffy at first but they are selling all
our inventory (at least what THEY say our inventory is) and
they do send us checks that clear the bank. Any comments?
