I attended the same _at_d.tech session and agree the panellists said
nothing. The reason in my view was that saying nothing was safer that
admitting they were doing a very bad job of it. As I think the guy from
AltaVista put it: "the Web needs organising". If it isn't the job of the
search engines (or portals, or directories, or whatever they are calling
themselves this week) to "organise" the Web, who's job is it?

In answer to Richard's questions, they will survive for the time being
because too many people throw too many ad dollars at them despite the
poor service they provide. This will last as long as there is no
alternative.

As the ad market matures the search engines will start to feel the
squeeze. Some will adapt, some will not.

BTW I thought _at_d.tech was a great conference and would recommend anyone
going to the next one. If any of the organisers are lurking, please
bring the event over to London soon. I attended Internet World over here
yesterday and it was not very exciting.
