In regards to Bruce's post:

Bruce's post has hit upon a serious issue in the online ads
industry. It is an issue that has been discussed a lot
within this forum. He's right, there are a lot of
discrepancies in online ad serving. The differences occur
not only between site server logs and ad serving numbers,
but also occur between different ad serving
companies themselves. I have worked closely both with
Focalink (now Adknowledge) and MatchLogic. In fact, as far
as I know, CLIQNOW! is the only rep firm (or company) that
has rigorously tested the differences between these two
systems. Also, as far as I know, CLIQNOW! is the only rep
firm that rigorously tested other ad serving features such
as the effects of rich media on ad views and clicks and the
effects of other systems such as TrueCount. In fact, when
we created these tests, our ad serving companies were
shocked at the discrepancies we found.

The fact of the matter is that we have to go with a system
that is audited. That is the only way advertisers can trust
that they are getting what they pay for. Most server logs
are not audited and therefore are not acceptable to most
advertisers. In a buyer's market, we are required to go
with what the buyers want: an audited ad view system. Of
course, we would like to offer every ad view possible, but
we also must abide by the standards that have been
established. I hope that, as the industry grows and
matures, one consistent standard emerges across different
platforms and different ad serving systems.
