Richard,
I cannot tell you how much pleasure I get from finding that I so often
agree with your analysis and theories.
I for one believe I have found the answer in your second premise of a
niche publication. I publish www.techexchange.com, which is a trade
publication devoted to computer technology solutions for the apparel,
textile and home furnishings industries. For the first two years, our
only source of revenue was from advertising listings that took the form
of an html page in a searchable database. Only 3 weeks ago we launched
our banner advertising program, and have had no trouble selling second
level banners at $100 per thousand. The home page banners at $150 per
thousand are more difficult to sell only because most of our existing
customers are software vendors who are interested in more targeted pages
than provided by the home page. I am confident that we will sell these
banners shortly.
