I think it is accurate to say that many or most people who
contribute articles to publications are advancing their
personal or professional agenda to some degree. In our case,
we try to weed out those for whom that is front and center.
If, in the course of establishing their reputation and
standing in the industry, someone wishes to contribute
something of value to our readers, we welcome their
contribution. We've slipped a few times, but we're trying to
keep the self aggrandizement to a minimum.
I would also say that we should look with suspicion on MOST
of the content we take in, online or off. The New York Times
has an agenda. CBS Evening News. Your local paper. Whatever
magazine you wish to name. We always need to read with a
discerning mind, fleshing out the wheat from the chaff. It's
not to say that all these are bad or biased. It's just to
say we need to approach everything we take in from whatever
media source with a healthy degree of skepticism.
