Hello,

ANN HANDLEY SAID IN HER "QUOTES OF THE DAY" REPORTING ON
DAY 2 OF E-BIZ:

>"Walk into any Wal-Mart or K-Mart and you'll see end-cap
>displays, daily sales, blue-light specials...the internet is
>not like that at all. 1999 will be the year of internet
>merchandising." - Mark Goldstein, CEO, Impulse! Buy Network

I think we need to keep in mind that Mark Goldstein's
company Impulse!Buy Network is trying to change that
situation. They believe that they can provide impulse buy
opportunities at random (well chosen?) sites around the net.

The technique and the technology is interesting but I don't
know that they have achieved anything that makes their
offers stand out the way that a flashing blue light or an
end cap display can do to call a shopper's attention to
merchandise.

A 60 frame per second 3d-without-glasses java applet that
literally visually "jumps off the screen" would certainly be
equivalent to an "end cap display", but turning on the
"blink" attribute in the text of a web banner ad is not
going to accomplish the same thing that real estate position
can.

I certainly wish Mark and his company well, but I also
suspect that we are going to see a lot more "Ginsu knives"
on the net soon.
