And this is true to a certain extent. Do a search on Yahoo!
and you won't even see a list of returns unless you click on
the 'Web Pages' button. This holds true for broad spectrum
searches, but as a viewer refines their search terms the
value of an actual listing increases proportionally.

If a viewer is looking for general information about cars
there is a good chance that the 'Portal' site will link them
to an acceptable page or site, but a search for a picture of
a '51 Buick will need to be done through the listings. This
also applies to viewers searching for a specific site. If
they have heard of a site, or recall seeing the name of one
on a banner but are not exactly sure of it's specific domain
name they are going to use the search function and look for
something that 'rings a bell'.

This also hinges on Eric Ward's advice regarding the
targeting of keyword combinations. Why waste time on a
general keyword like 'car' when '51 Buick' will bring your
site up in front of someone looking for exactly what you
have?

Paul, you also prefaced this paragraph with a statement
regarding services to come, and I am not clear whether or
not these are those services or not, but they do lead into
another area of the current thread. Optimization.
Registration is not optimization. Registration is an
integral part of optimization but is ineffective unless the
web pages are coded in a clear manner to the search engines.

The adage "building a good site will get you decent
placement" is not exactly true anymore. What's a good site?
Frames, Javascript, and Flash? Or a clean and simple site
with no bells and whistles? Does a builder spend the time
necessary to research all the public domain information
regarding search engine indexing? Or do they stick to what
they know and pay a specialist to do this for them?

For more information on 'optimization' check out the
searchbuilder site. http://www.searchbuilder.com
