I think many web design firms are at the root of this
problem. They feed off ignorance and fear to sell their
design and hosting solutions to businesses. They sell the
"easy" solutions of search engine submissions, and automated
press releases as a value added service because it is a
"fill in the blanks" solution that they can perform and
communicate. They don't care (for the most part) if it is
effective. They don't take the time to understand the
business or the businesss' customers. They don't make the
effort to explain to their customers how business online is
a virtual extension of the brick and mortar world. They
want to promote the mystique because it heightens their
perceived value. This is like a local printer providing
marketing advice. A printer who has a cousin that is a
sales rep for the yellow pages and knows "all the secrets"
for making the phone ring.

Then when the site fails to produce results the business
begins looking around for ways to improve. Still believing
that search engines are the answer... they turn to
"optimization". The business is abused further by the
optimizer who still has no marketing experience beyond their
very narrow technical scope. Perhaps visits increase
(perhaps not) but results are still in the dumper because
the pretty online brochure with all of those gateway pages
still doesn't provide any real value to the visitor, answer
WIIFM or involve the visitor in any way.

The good news for those of us with some marketing knowledge
is that once a business has gone through this painful
learning experience they are much more receptive to
"hearing" what we have to say. We just have to wait for the
market to mature. So all you designers and optimizers out
there who fit the description above - keep up the good work
educating and preparing my future clients.
