I agree that Search Engine Optimization is a fantastic waste
of time. I think that Danny Sullivan is right on in his
definition of passive and aggressive optimizing. Aggressive
(fiddling with the source code, creating multiple pages) is
a sleezy and old-school way to reel in visitors. Passive
(checking rank, making use of good HTML copy) should
definitely be done every month or so as site maintenance to
make sure your tagline, description and URL are correct and
linking properly.

The sites I work with get at least 50-60% of their traffic
from Search Engine referrals from Yahoo, AOL NetFind,
AltaVista, InfoSeek, Excite, Lycos, HotBot and WebCrawler.
An average of 15% of the SE traffic is simply a search for
the company name.

* Disclaimer: my definition of SE Optimization does not
include keyword buys. I consider that a function of media
planning & buying.
