I don't believe a generic top 20 list, with corresponding
market share will be any use to you. A large proportion of
Internet users are relatively inexperienced with the medium,
and will never subscribe to a mailing list. I suspect
different groups of people will use different mail software.

Of course, what really matters to you is what software your
subscribers are using. Every message a subscriber sends to
you, including their initial subscription request, will
contain information about which mailer they are using. Of
course, if your subscribers join your list via a Web site,
you won't know what mail software they'd use. The
"X-Mailer:" header field usually contains this information,
but some mailers (such as Pine) do not include this header,
but can be identified by their "Message-Id:" headers.

It would be trivial to write software to analyse the headers
of mail you have received from subscribers. I expect this
information would be more useful than general information
about what everyone with an e-mail address uses.

It would be quite easy for any good programmer to do what I
have proposed. Of course, finding out the features of every
e-mail client would be more difficult, but can probably be
found on vendors' Web sites.

Write to me off-list if you're interested in discussing this
further.

Tom
