Hey all,
I'm pouring through some results from a recent banner campaign and I ran
across some very weird data. I've never seen this before and am wondering
if anyone else has.
Let me set it up the situation for you.
We ran an HTML banner on Excite. The banner had a drop-down menu. When you
selected one of the listings, you were redirected through our server, then
on to a specific page on the client's site. I coded each value in the menu
with a "?EXCT" so I would know a particular redirect came from Excite.
About 2300 of these redirects, look very, very weird (I've included a
representative sample below). All of them are coming from the same IP
address. Moreover, the time stamps on blocks of the redirects are often
within seconds of each other. In some cases, they are identical.
At first, I thought it might be the way Excite is redirecting on their end
to count the clicks. But the difference between our numbers is very large.
(They count hundreds of clicks on the final report; I'm counting thousands
redirects on our end.)
It occurred on between November 9th and November 14th at different times of
the day. The bulk of it happened on November 14th.
Attempts to identify who owns that IP address were inconclusive.
The way the time stamps are so close together, it makes me think the whole
thing is some sort of spider artifact. But I've never heard of a spider
spidering an HTML banner ad before. Besides, The banner is being
dynamically served on amajor search engine, so spidering it is impossible,
right?
The good folks at Excite are trying to figure out what is up. But has
anyone else ever seen something like this?
