I thought that this news tidbit I just received was
interesting in light of recent discussions regarding revenue
generated by online advertising. It came from the Cambridge
Newsletter (http://www.cambridgetechnologies.com/), and in a
nutshell says that many sites are having to move into
e-commerce because they aren't able to make enough money
from ad sales.
Oh, if only they could somehow make money off of that unsold
inventory... whatever shall they do? ;->

"Time Warner, Walt Disney Co and News Corp are preparing to
launch ambitious e-commerce ventures on their websites to
supplement revenue generated by online advertising. This
move into online retail highlights the difficulties media
companies are experiencing in making money from content
supported by advertising.
A profitable business based on ad sales with a successful
e-commerce platform on top is what is needed for a robust,
powerful business going forward, according to Scott Ehrlich,
a senior vice president and executive at News Corp. News
Corp., whose holdings include Twentieth Century Fox, is set
to launch an online Fox store this month.
It will sell merchandise from its TV programs, as well as
sports merchandise. Similarly, Time Warner plans to sell
merchandise from its vast media holdings through its
pathfinder.com site. Although hugely popular, the site has
yet to realize a profit and because of the volume of users,
Time Warner is reluctant to axe the site."
