In reply to those who don't help those who are fishing....
1) I think we all have called, faxed or email a company for
informaiton on them, just to make sure what we were getting
from someone else was ok. Or we wanted to learn about a
market and asked for tons of press kits, or documents, etc -
only to use them for our own knowledge, etc and not to buy
from the company.
2) The flip side is that we should simply have two types of
informaton. Standarrd template information to send to the
fishers or the unsure people (still quite update and
professional) but only takes a mouse click to send. And then
when they follow up or can answer a serious questions
(what's your objective, budget, time, etc) send them the
custom made "serious" information.
3) Several months ago I was curious what it costs to
advertise on Yahoo, Infoseek and somewhere else they sent me
the info. Did I advertise - no, did it help me understand
some questions I had - yes. Will their information be useful
in the future? Yes.
4) We all started at ground zero and are only at the place
we've been in this advertising world of the Internet due to
others who've helped us directly, indirectly, intentionally,
or un-intentionally.
5) Also let's remember the 80/20 rule - 80% of the queries
we get will not be money generators, 20% will be. You got to
serve the 100% to keep getting the 20%. Also, even the 80%
who don't directly make you revenue may pass your name
along, or come back months later - it happens to me all the
time.
