Re: ONLINE-ADS>> A Rant About Online Sales Reps

Jim Meskauskas was dead on when he wrote the following about
the sometimes-rocky relationship between interactive
agencies and the media reps. they work with: "both sides
need to make advances towards the other if this, and many of
the other problems plaguing interactive advertising, are to
ever be resolved."

Just as Jim has horror stories about reps. who provide
miserable service, I have horror stories about dealing with
agencies. Particularly evil is the practice of demanding a
proposal or a plan, particularly a complex one, RIGHT NOW,
then never hearing from the agency about the proposal again.
If I can get specific, a shining and unique exception to
this is Molly Watson, of Tierney & Partners in Philadelphia,
who called to tell me what happened to a proposal I did for
them. Similarly, a lot of the allegedly "hipper" internet
agencies are really children's crusades, where you encounter
a lot of attitude, but an amazingly unprofessional way of
doing things. For example, after traveling to Washington,
D.C. to meet with the media director of an agency that was
supposedly doing a lot of buying, and was expert, two of the
people in the meeting proceeded to pass around a menu and
discuss what type of pizza they were going to have have for
lunch after the meeting was over. The meeting ended
quickly, I can assure you.

The rep. and the agency ultimately are partners. My job is
to educate my customers about Flycast, and to assist them in
getting results for their clients. I'm not selling used
cars -- if I let them down or mislead them, I'll never get
their business again, and I want that business. Similarly,
we're a really valuable resource for them, and I've been
able to step in and really save the day for some of my
customers. As in any other field, the goal is a mutually
beneficial working relationship that both of us enjoy. It's
that simple, and that's the goal for everyone. Jim's right.
Boy, is he right.
