We do a lot of HTML banners and the only way I have been
able to count clicks accurately is to redirect it all
through our server. I have yet to do an ad buy where the
publisher can do it for me.
So, basically, I have to rely on the publisher's reporting
system for the impression numbers and our logs for the
clicks.
Our HTML banners often take the form of a pull-down menu in
which the individual menu items lead to specific parts of a
client's site. What is cool about doing it that way is you
can identify specific areas of product interest by comparing
how many times each menu item is accessed.
The reason we use HTML banners, even though they are more
trouble as far as reporting, is that we consistently see an
increase in response when compared to animated banners. In a
current campaign we are running, we are seeing as much as a
60% increase in response. I've heard of people getting as
much as a 300% increase in response. And out of all the
techniques out there to make banners "interactive," HTML
banners are by far the least expensive to create and implement.
