Hi: I've been struggling with this. Our sites typically have 10,000 to
30,000 pages of content. When we first started, the big engine spiders
would typically get to a few hundred pages, then quit. I tried creating
pages specifically to make it easier for the spiders to navigate our
site, and submitted those pages. But to no avail. Our exposure in
these engines is getting smaller and smaller. Positioning does nothing
if 99% of content doesn't get indexed. This forces us all to work
harder to find *specific* information on the Internet and the usefulness
of the Internet for *real* research is limited until these problems are
fixed. I wish the folks at Inktomi, Excite, Altavista, etc. would
figure out a way to use a distributed index. I've been using WebFerret
to find stuff lately because it randomly selects engines, which jolts my
searching activity by rote from one search site, often with fresher
results.
This is a big problem for those of us in the content business. We may
be forced to create OUR OWN distributed search engines, or a search site
that only indexes sites of 1000 pages or more, freeing us from the
Geocities and Angelfire sites, and the META tag spammers...
If anyone's interested in a JV, let me know :-)
