We've had the same problem with some 3rd party ads. If their
server isn't responding, and it's an ad using
JavaScript/iframe stuff to select a JavaScript ad to show,
the page won't appear until it loads. If thier site is does,
the page just hangs until it times out. That's really quite
bad.

In terms of reporting and stats from one place for a buyer,
3rd part ad servers are quite nice. But they could collect
the traffic data and prepare it for the client even if the
banners were served directly from the web sites. Another
option is for these places to come up with a simple,
standard ascii format for data (maybe even something comma
delimited) which all sites need to report in. Data sent to a
3rd party management company could be automatically
imported, and it could also be automatically created by the
ad software running at the web site. I guess 3rd party ad
companies feel they get more "trustworthy" data when they
serve it themselves, but since the numbers come out totally
wrong...
