I think people have to keep something in mind with regards
to affiliations, which also correlates to the effectiveness
of banner exchanges (like LinkExchange). The potential of
benefiting comes from traffic. That's the major component.
All things being equal (fair pay rate, good reporting
methods) - the money a site makes from affiliations is
dependent on overall traffic.
I hear numbers being thrown out that Site X made $1400 in a
quarter through an affiliation. I would like to see their
log files. Chances are, they are getting high traffic and
the affiliation is not their main money-maker; rather, it is
a case of "if it is available, why not set it up." Let's
look at some realistic numbers:
- a site has 10,000 page impressions on their "Book Review
page" in a quarter
- 10% of the individuals click through the link to Amazon 3D
1000 potential buyers
- 10% of 1000 actually purchase this book 3D 100 sales.
- the book is $20 and the commission at 15% is $3
- 100 sales at $3 3D $300 for that quarter
Now, my numbers are probably generous and not from
experience - we don't have a book review page with 10,000
impressions per quarter.
We have the major affiliations on our site (Amazon, Beyond,
and some ClickTrade), and use it in many ways: advertorials
in which we run a review of a book with a link to purchase
it directly from Amazon, or just a simple "buy this software
and help support our site". Last quarter we made $24.17 from
Amazon from our whole site. Obviously, we need to get more
traffic.
So, even if you find a great deal out there with a high
profit share, consider that the traffic of your site is the
ultimate predictor of money made. For us "if it is
available, why not set it up."
