Many, many lists run ads....and we've had mailing lists from
before when we had banner ads. So this discussion hasn't
come up because people need another advertising outlet. It's
come up because there's an argument to be made that mailing
lists reach more people on a consistent basis than web
sites. Many might even say that the information in some
lists is more valuable than that found at some web sites.
And yet despite this, mailing lists have been seen as
second- rate to web sites when it comes to pulling ad
dollars.

Should lists not carry ads? Sure -- but then what supports
these lists? One alternative is to have people pay to
subscribe to the lists, and experience shows that most
people don't do this. The other is to have people run lists
out of the goodness of the hearts -- and some people do. But
operators of many good lists can't get by that way -- so
text ads are what keeps them running.

Here's a good test. Are you ready to pay Tenagra $25/year to
run this mailing list? Most people are not. Something's got
to keep the list running, and it, like others, takes ads.
