Re: Bidding up search terms at GoTo.com
While we're discussing Goto.com, I noticed this today for
the first time - I'm assuming that it's new. Top 100 Search
Terms - http://www.goto.com/d/top100/
I find it ironic that Yahoo would be number 6, what's even
worse (from a end-user's point of view) Yahoo.com isn't even
listed in the results. The same goes for hotmail at 19.
Atleast amazon.com (yes with the .com) had the sense to buy
their term.
While I like Goto from a publisher's point of view, their
biggest problem long term will be getting sites that aren't
selling something to bid for placement. So many terms,
where it's pretty obvious that people aren't looking to buy
something, only have someone shilling something. I.e.
someone searching for Leonardo Dicaprio is probably not
looking to buy his movies. If Goto doesn't work hard to
give searchers the results that they are looking for, it's
doomed to wither except among people looking to buy
something (which doesn't seem to be their target audience).
