Re: Bidding up search terms at GoTo.com
I think that this is the nature of advertising - that sites
selling a product can easily determine the cost of bringing
someone to their site vs. the cost of the product sold. If
a site spends $3 per customer (e.g. $0.30 per click and ten
click-thrus until a visitor becomes customer), and the
return is $6 in sales - that's easy to see ROI. For sites
like ours, a magazine, the cost of bringing someone has to
be lower, since our money is made back on advertising. We
can't justify spending $3 to bring someone in.
The purpose of this post is to relate our experience with
GoTo. We've exploited GoTo in every way possible to bring
cheaply in a considerable number of people for pennies.
Some of our terms are obscure, but they still bring 5-10
people per month to our site per search term. A good
example, if you search GoTo with the term "motivation", you
see us listed 2nd. We pay $0.06 per click. In January, we
had 51 new visitors. We are #1 on the term "working at
home" - pay 2 cents per click through and got 30 new people
in January. The value is just too good. (by the way, forget
I just told you this so we keep our position!)
My advice to sites is to spend some time figuring out the
more obscure terms that are still within you topic or
commercial area and then write good ad copy to attract only
those who really belong on your site.
