I too, believe that we have reached a consensus. I only
said that we can postulate this position, not that we should
carve it on stone tablets. As with any postulate, we now
need evidence to prove or disprove the postulate.
I am not advocating its validity or invalidity (that
wouldn't be scientific!), just that it is a meaningful
position that would have value if it were known to be true
or untrue, even if only conditionally. At least it gives
us a reference point to try to be scientific about. I am
sure that years from now we will all look back at these
attempts as nothing more than a primitive start toward
gaining a scientific understanding of online-advertising.
The best we can do is learn from our experiences so that we
can evolve a cohesive set of theories that have a strong
predictive ability for most of the people most of the time.
Like any young scientific discipline, most of the early
theories don't stand up to the test of time, but we do need
to start somewhere. Just because we aren't discovering a
universal truth, it doesn't mean it can't make (or save) you
a lot of money, and isn't that the most important thing
about all this?
