I asked Laura Wheless, their PR specialist and here's what
she emailed me:
"Per your Direct Hit question, I would first recommend
reading the article at the URL below - it explains in good
detail how our algorithm and the Direct HIt technology work

But in basic terms, sites included in the top results that
are not frequently clicked on move down, and sites that are
low in the results and get clicked on move up with a
heavier weighting.
Later, Andrew DeVriess told me in person that a click on a
lower-down result is weighted much more heavily than a click
on one of the top results. Also, the tech takes into
consideration not only the click but how long the user stays
before clicking back to the next one.
