Harry,
The combination of both works best in direct mail... and
some of the brightest companies are taking lessons learned
in that medium and applying it to the Web, which is quickly
becoming another great direct marketing vehicle. For
instance, state your highest price (top product)
first...tell the customer you'll take __% off and show them
the new discounted price. Then take your next highest price
and do the same thing. Of course, to do this, you'll have
to specify individual products but it may work better than
giving them a similar offer on ALL products. People
generally buy or are interested in buying because of
emotions and it's difficult to induce this emotional
motivation with a random offer.
