Re: AltaVista Testing Paid Search Results

I for one would love to see Alta Vista go slow in advancing
this. I've long advocated Alta Vista as the research (not
the advertising) tool for clients and others, because of the
strength of the information and the search tool. They've
been evolving it in a way that takes away the market
research capability of the tool (URL searches seem to be
relatively worthless anymore, for example), and that's a
shame.

This seems like a relatively short term way to make money
and a great long term way to lose reputation.

That may seem like a better idea than a short term way to
gain reputation and a long term way to lose money, but
neither approach seems like the way to succeed in this
marketplace for long. Alta Vista has to be more ingenious
than this or they're in danger to go the way of Webcrawler
and Magellan.

If every major search engine succumbs to this kind of
me-tooism, it should open the door for another approach by a
potential new "major", whether it be someone like
Thunderstone or another, to position to become a "real" tool
for those who want to actually "search" the Internet.

I look forward to reading the wrap-up and other info over
time on Search Engine Watch.
