word of mouth on the internet

Dear George

In welcoming you to the stewardship of the o-a forum I would
like to suggest a new thread for discussion: generating
"word of mouth communication" on the internet.

I am often intrigued by the clever .exe files that are e
mailed to me by my friends: stripping santas, cupids
shooting arrows, soap opera characters looking for dates
etc. All of these are excellent (it seems to me) ways of
generating publicity and they seem to be very much an on
line version of "word of mouth" marketing, where you
stimulate people to talk about your product in clubs and
pubs.

As a diversion from the usual talk about banners,
sponsorships etc I would be interested to know whether
anyone on the list has experience of marketing using this
technique, how effective it was and how (if at all) they
measured effectiveness.
