InterNIC No Longer Reveals Contact Info

Greetings,

I just noticed that Network Solutions, the company that
administer's the InterNIC's domain name registry, recently
changed its system again (they've been mucking around with
it frequently recently) so that when you search on a domain
name that is already taken, it no longer provides you the
name and contact info of the party that has registered the
domain.

I suspect they've done this due to spammers who troll the
NIC dB for email addresses (I know that the volume of spam
I've received went up markedly when I started registering
various domains).

This new policy is a real pain, however, as it was a great
research tool. For example, I discovered the change b/c I
was looking for a contact at American Express dealing with
Web marketing issues (for a research study I'm working on),
and of course AmEx's site is of little help in how to get a
hold of anyone at the corporate headquarters, so I planned
to call the number listed on the NIC. Similarly, I've had
clients who have wanted to buy domains, and the easiest way
to get a hold of the owner of inactive domains was the NIC
registry. But now those numbers are no longer public.

Anyone have any insights into this? Any domain junkies out
there yet figured out how to circumvent Network Solutions'
latest customer unfriendly move?
