Re: Online Ads>> Ad Blocking Software

Many respondents here (Ben Cathers <ben_at_phatgames.com> is
just the latest) have gotten their undies in a bunch over ad
blocking software.

The software is used by a very small percentage of people.
Blocking these peoples' access to your Web site is shooting
a squirrel with an elephant gun. I guarantee the public
reaction against sites that did this would be huge -- making
the block blocking counter productive.

What should concern you are the "mental ad blocks" that
increasing numbers of users have with regard to the Web.
That is, we see the ad, but we deliberately don't register
it as we go about our business. You can push your ad in
front of us, but you can't make us notice it, any more than
you can make us buy from you.

As a reporter, I learned a version of this lesson early in
my career. "Sources" who were important to my story refused
to talk with me, some even hanging up the phone. Yet my
story had to be written. And rival reporters sometimes got
interviews with the same people who hung-up on me! Catch the
Clue -- you can catch more flies with honey than you can
with vinegar.
