In response to Mike Nelson's comments regarding his equating
domain name investment with real estate investment, I
totally agree.
Assuming you are not buying up names that violate someone
else's trademark, etc. and that you are actually paying for
the registrations you submit, I see no problem with it at
all.
The people that I think are hurting everyone are the ones
who go out and register hundreds of names, try to promote
them, and never pay for them. This problem should be cured
by the new payment rules.
I don't want to live in a world where some big brother is
looking over our shoulders with a vague definition of what
constitutes "reasonable use" of a domain name while it
brands some as "cyber squatters" and lets others keep their
names because they are "in the process of" developing or
exploiting their domain name.
Who says that putting up a lame site is a better form of
exploitation of a domain name than holding it for investment
from someone capable of putting it to its highest value use?
Is wasting bandwidth by putting up a meaningless site a
valid method of protecting your right to keep or sell
something you paid for? Not in my humble opinion. It's just
a waste of bandwidth. Period.
So Mike, I say "go for it" and let the profits fall where
they may. And yes, if anyone is wondering, I do own a few
extra names myself. Just wanted to make my disclosure clear
to all.
