How much can advertising support

How much can advertisers support.

General Magic, started Portico - a fee based service. And
they still do have it. But now they have a free advertiser
supported, lite version - called MyTalk. Intranetics charged
for their "Intranets in a box", now they have a free service
and have renamed their company - Intranets.com. I know
consumers will flock to these things, and small businesses
will shun them, as evidenced in an article at
http://www.smallbiztechnology.com/ctrmj/freeorfee.htm -
however, will any of these businesses survive in the long
run? If banner advertising prices are dropping, let's assume
advertising for these other services is not that much more,
if not the same....let's also assume that they are not
nearing the page views of Yahoo or any of the other major
guys.

OneBox, Efax, Fax4Free - all free services, in heavy
competition (without a Microsoft to bankroll them like
Hotmail...) what's the deal here...this is crazy.

I know the WEB has advertising supported sites, however,
these sites like my own - sell additional products, value
added services, sponsorships and etc.
