Brian,
If you are in the U.S. you should be able to find email
lists of names through a list broker. Usually they sell
lists of names to direct mail marketers. A company that
comes to mind is Wunderman Cato Johnson (www.wcj.com).
They also have email lists or should be able to tell you
how to get them. The Direct Marketing Association
(http://www.the-dma.org/) might also be able to help you
find lists. Canadians can also go about getting lists from
list brokers however they are few and far between at the
moment (if you have a qualified list you might want to
consider selling it).
Companies such as Digital Impact in California
(www.digital-impact.com) will design email campaigns for you
and can let you know about getting address to. Speaking in
terms of a receiver of such email - I have an antiquated
email system that does not receive html so when I get a
HTML message (ie full color message) I am irritated.
Likewise I would never open up an attachment from someone
that I did not know (virus abound). One option might be to
send a text message with a url directing the reader to a
site hosting the full color ad. I do not speak from
experience as designer of an email marketing campaign but
rather a receiver of messages - perhaps others that have
designed campaigns might have some views.
By the by I am a conference organizer and have just
developed a conference on email marketing - check it out at

Hope that helps
