Pop-ups are not the best solution. People don't really like
it. They tend to close it before actualy seing it.
We have tried a new model on our site (not advertising
related site though) by using full page HTML ad that is
displayed for 20 seconds or untill user clicks, whichever
comes first. We are surprised by results!
While the same ad displayed as standard banner is attracting
50% less clicks comparing to our other products (we spent
100.000 banners for each of five product campaign so far,
with average CTR 0.65%), the same product attracted almost
50% (half of all visitors to our web site) of users when
advertised using this "entrance billboard".
However, while easily implemented if you're in control of
your own server, this model may not be easily implemented
through third party ad servers. Both for some technical
reasons and organizational.
The ad in question works more or less like a sort of a
billboard, or maybe a TV commercial. The response is
probably so huge because the advertised content is our own
product, and users came to us in the first place. However,
results are about 250% better then expected!
Anyway, if you're interested in what I am saying, jump to
http://www.artplus.hr and you'll see the ad before you enter
the site.
