Selling Ads on Non-Profit Site

I am a marketing and business development manager for a
State Chamber of Commerce. We are currently working with an
internationally recognized marketing firm to develop a web
portal, due to launch this January, that will be a valuable
resource for companies doing business in our state. Since
we are a non-profit, much of our funding for the project has
come from corporate donations, but these donations will not
cover the complete cost of developement and maintenance. We
are currently recruiting sponsors who will receive banner
space on our site. My question is this: The portal will
have a very sought after audience (HR executives,
Purchasing, Accounting, etc.). We would like to sell
advertising space to raise the money necessary for upkeep,
but throughout my research I have not come across a
non-profit (.org) that has advertising on their site. If I
was to sell ad space would I be violating some unwritten
protocal? It would be difficult otherwise to continue
raising $$ to keep the portal current.
