Joe, I work with several Chambers of Commerce in Minnesota
and have sold ads on chamber Web sites. I'm not aware of
any unwritten rule. However, I would recommend sponsorships
rather than ads.
What's the difference? Primarily, the difference is the
name. But beyond that, sponsorship implies a relationship
and an endorsement of the organization's goals by the
sponsor.
Sponsorships have been known to generate higher revenue per
CPM than banner advertising. A good match between sponsor
and organization (as with targeted advertising) can result
in better results for the ad.., er, sponsor, especially if
the sponsorship can be couched as an endorsement rather than
an ad.
By the way, I might be interested in an ad or sponsorship on
your site as I have a couple of Web site products to sell to
chambers of commerce. Expect I'll be hearing from you. S;-)
